A Little Niche Goes a Long Way! Bespoke Bathroom Niche Lighting

Sometimes it's the smallest details that make the biggest difference.
When planning a new bathroom, it's easy to focus on the tiles, fittings and colour scheme, but lighting can make just as much of a difference to the finished room.
At Nicholas Electrical, we particularly enjoy working on those little finishing touches that bring a room together, and bathroom niche lighting is a lovely example.
What Is Bathroom Niche Lighting?
A niche is a recessed area within a wall, often found in showers or above baths. They're a practical way of creating storage without having shelves sticking out into the room.
Add a discreet LED light, however, and that simple recess becomes a feature in its own right.
The light can highlight the texture of the tiles, create a warm glow and give the bathroom a softer atmosphere without relying entirely on bright overhead lighting.
It's a small addition that can make quite a difference.
Two Different Bathrooms, Two Different Looks
The photographs we've shared show two examples of niche lighting we've installed at Nicholas Electrical.
One features smaller, individually illuminated recesses, while the other has a longer horizontal niche with warm LED lighting running along its length.
Both achieve a slightly different look, showing how niche lighting can be designed to complement the style of the bathroom.
And please excuse the dust in our photographs! We took these just after completing the electrical installation, before everything had received its final clean. Sometimes we're a little too keen to photograph the lighting once it's working!
It's Not Just for Bathrooms
Although bathroom niche lighting is becoming increasingly popular, the same idea can work beautifully elsewhere around the home.
Recessed LED lighting can be incorporated into:
- Kitchen shelving and display areas
- Living room alcoves
- Built-in shelving and bookcases
- Bedroom feature walls
- Display cabinets
- Hallways and architectural features
Lighting doesn't always need to be the brightest feature in a room. Sometimes a discreet strip of warm light is all that's needed to draw attention to an interesting detail.
Planning Niche Lighting Into Your Project
If you're renovating a bathroom or planning a new installation, it's worth thinking about the lighting early in the process.
Positioning, cable routes, access to LED drivers and the type of lighting used all need consideration before the walls are finished.
Bathrooms also have specific electrical safety requirements, so choosing suitable fittings and ensuring they're installed correctly is particularly important.
At Nicholas Electrical, we can work alongside your bathroom installer, builder or other trades to incorporate lighting into the overall design.
We believe the best results come from thinking about these details before the project is finished rather than trying to add them afterwards.
