The use of electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles is growing
strongly; the numbers of charging points installed has grown 7 fold over the last six years and is forecast to grow by 10 times in the next 5 years. The current percentage of new cars registered each
year which are electric or hybrid is 2%, this is forecast to rise to 10% by 2022.
This increase provides a real opportunity for trained and
registered electricians to diversify and increase their business by installing EV charge points at home, at the kerbside, commercial premises and at the workplace, and also to obtain grants against
the installation costs for their customers.

Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme – Operated by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) (part of the Department for Transport)
If you own an Electric Vehicle you are eligible to apply for the
Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) which provides grant funding of up to 75% towards the cost of installing electric vehicle charge points to your domestic
Part of the criteria for applying for the grant is that the
installer must be part of a recognised electrical registration scheme such as a NICEIC Domestic Installer or NICEIC Approved Contractor; they must have also attended appropriate training that can be
offered by NICEIC.
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a voucher-based scheme that provides support
towards the up-front costs of the purchase and installation of electric vehicle charge-points,
for eligible businesses, charities and public sector organizations.
Workplaces can apply for vouchers using the Workplace Charging Scheme application form
On-street Residential Charge point Scheme
The On-street Residential Charge point Scheme (ORCS) provides grant
funding for local authorities towards the cost of installing on-street residential charge points for plug-in electric vehicles.
